Apache Blackberry

LATIN NAME: Rubus 'Apache'

The Basics

Apache Blackberry is a productive, thornless blackberry variety known for its large, flavorful fruit and vigorous upright growth habit. Developed for excellent fruit quality and easy harvesting, this variety produces firm, glossy black berries with a sweet, rich flavor that can be enjoyed fresh or used in jams, desserts, preserves, and other recipes.

Its thornless canes make harvesting and maintaining the plant much easier than traditional blackberry varieties. Apache Blackberry is self-fertile, so only one plant is needed for fruit production, although proper care and growing conditions will help encourage a plentiful harvest.

The Needs

Amount of Sunlight: Prefers full sun; at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight is recommended for the best fruit production.

Amount of Water: Water regularly, especially while the plant is establishing and during flowering and fruit development. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Soil Conditions: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral.

Cold Hardiness Zone: 5–9

The Care

Apache Blackberry performs best in a sunny location with good drainage and adequate air circulation. Applying mulch around the root zone can help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

Blackberries produce fruit on second-year canes called floricanes. After those canes finish producing fruit, they should be removed to make room for healthy new canes that will produce the following season. Although Apache has an upright growth habit, providing support or a simple trellis can help keep mature plants organized and make harvesting easier.
